Are universal spares a more popular choice in the current climate? From a recent survey of industry independent spare parts specialists the answer seems to be no. Catering Insight asked 6 different parts companies whether they thought more companies were turning to cheaper pattern parts rather than stipulating genuine parts but the consensus seemed to be that availability rather than price was the major driving factor when selecting parts - companies would normally rather have the genuine manufacturers parts assuming they can be obtained in a timely manner. If parts companies are not able to provide these parts quickly enough then catering companies are likely to turn to more readily available alternatives to avoid catering equipment downtime. However it was also noted that with margins continuing to be squeezed it is important for manufacturers to make sure the cost of their parts does not rise so far above the price of non-branded versions to either drive users to the cheaper alternatives, or worse, make room for fake parts being passed off as OEM parts.
