Following on from the Welsh WRAP Zero waste targets revealed last month Scotland have this week unveiled the first pan-industry strategy for the Scottish food and drink industry aimed at tackling waste. The policy launched by the trade body Scotland Food & Drink aims to recognise the importance of sustainability to the future of the Scottish food and drink industry to deliver its growth ambition. It aims to drive the industry to become environmentally and economically sustainable, while promoting the sharing of best practice and collaborative working to achieve its objectives across the supply chain. Scotland have identified their food and drink industry as a key sector in delivering real economic growth. Their target of £12.5bn by 2017 should very likely be achieved early - it is currently valued at £12.4bn. Additionally exports have grown by more than 50% since 2006. The strategy focuses on five core themes, including the efficient use of resources and waste management. Core themes very much welcomed by The Scottish Government and Zero Waste Scotland. They were also pleased to see the work Scotland Food & Drink and its partners will be doing to proactively encourage the industry to realise the benefits of sustainability in their businesses.
